Potato Gratin

Today we prepare potato gratin - a delicious and fragrant dish of French cuisine. Gratin is a casserole of thin potato slices prepared in cream sauce with the addition of hard cheese and fragrant seasonings. The components of the gratin are so simple that you'll cook it at home with ease. Potato gratin is a rather nourishing and self-sufficient dish, but can also be a side dish to meat or poultry if desired.

Ingredients

  • Potato
    1 kg
  • Cream 20%
    300 ml
  • Butter
    50 g
  • Cheese
    150 g
  • Garlic
    2 clove
  • Dried basil
    0.5 tsp
  • Nutmeg
    0.5 tsp
  • Salt
    - to taste
  • Black pepper
    - to taste



Steps

  • 1. Wash the potatoes and clean them from the peel. Cut tubers into the thinnest slices as possible. For this purpose it is convenient to use a special chopper or kitchen machine.
  • 2. Wash cut potatoes thoroughly under cold water to get rid of excess starch. Then transfer the slices of potatoes into a pan, pour the vegetables with cold water and put them on fire.
  • 3. After water boils, add some salt to the pan. Cook the potatoes on low fire for 3 minutes, after which throw the vegetables back on the collander.
  • 4. In deep ware letā€™s connect cream and melted butter cooled to room temperature.
  • 5. Grind hard cheese on a large grater. One third of the grated cheese letā€™s leave for decoration of the gratin. The rest of the grated cheese letā€™s add to the cream sauce and mix.
  • 6. Add seasonings and garlic cloves passed through the press to the sauce so that gratin turns out very fragrant. Let's salt to taste.
  • 7. Grease heat-resistant form for baking with butter. On the bottom of the form put slices of potatoes. The layer of vegetables should be sufficiently thin, about 3-4 mm.
  • 8. Over the layer of potatoes place several tablespoons of cream sauce. Distribute it evenly among vegetables.
  • 9. Alternating layers of potatoes and cream sauce, fill the form for baking. The last layer of potatoes letā€™s pour with cream sauce. On top, distribute evenly the remaining grated cheese.
  • 10. Cover the form with a lid or food foil and send gratin to the oven pre-heated to 180 degrees. Bake the dish for 30-35 minutes. Then remove the lid or foil and continue to bake the gratin for another 7-10 minutes until the golden crust.
  • 11. Serve the ready dish in hot form and cut gratin into portion pieces.
