Buttermilk Substitutes
Everything you need to know about cooking and baking with buttermilk including how to make your own buttermilk substitute at home.
Ingredients
Option 1: Lemon Juice + Milk
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1 cup milk (or non-dairy alternative milk)
Option 2: White Vinegar + Milk
• 1 tablespoon white vinegar
• 1 cup milk (or non-dairy alternative milk)
Option 3: Cream of Tarter + Milk
• 1 3/4 teaspoons cream of tarter
• 1 cup milk (or non-dairy alternative milk)
Option 4: Sour Cream + Milk
• 3/4 cup sour cream
• 1/4 cup milk
Instructions
For Options 1 through 3
1.Simply stir ingredients together and let stand 5 minutes before using in any recipe calling for buttermilk. Be sure to make the appropriate measurement scaling adjustments needed for the amount of buttermilk called for in the recipe.
For Option 4
1.Whisk sour cream with milk until combined. Use in any recipe calling for buttermilk.
