Gyro

Gyro

Gyro is a popular Greek dish consisting of flavorful, marinated meat (traditionally lamb or a combination of lamb and beef) that is thinly sliced and served in a warm pita bread with tzatziki sauce and various toppings. Here's a recipe to make gyro at home:

Ingredients: For the gyro meat:

  • 1 pound (450 grams) ground lamb or a mixture of ground lamb and beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the tzatziki sauce:

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup cucumber, peeled, seeded, and finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For serving:

  • Pita bread
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced onions
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Lettuce or salad greens

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the ground lamb (or lamb and beef mixture) with the chopped onion, minced garlic, dried oregano, ground cumin, ground coriander, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the mixture for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld together.
  3. Preheat your grill or oven broiler.
  4. Shape the marinated meat mixture into a loaf or log shape.
  5. If using a grill: Cook the meat over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until it is browned and cooked through. This should take about 15-20 minutes. Alternatively, If using an oven broiler: Place the meat on a broiler pan or a wire rack set on a baking sheet. Broil the meat on high heat, turning occasionally, until it is browned and cooked through. This should take about 15-20 minutes as well.
  6. Once cooked, remove the meat from the grill or broiler, and let it rest for a few minutes. Then, thinly slice the meat across the grain into thin strips.
  7. Meanwhile, prepare the tzatziki sauce by combining Greek yogurt, chopped cucumber, minced garlic, lemon juice, fresh dill, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix well until the ingredients are well combined.
  8. Warm the pita bread in a skillet or microwave.
  9. To assemble the gyro, place a warm pita bread on a plate and layer it with slices of the cooked meat, sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, sliced cucumbers, and lettuce or salad greens. Drizzle tzatziki sauce over the top.
  10. Fold the pita bread around the filling, and you can wrap it in aluminum foil to help hold its shape, if desired.
  11. Serve the gyro immediately and enjoy!

You can customize your gyro by adding other toppings such as feta cheese, olives, or hot sauce according to your preference. Gyro is a delicious and satisfying meal that can be enjoyed for lunch or dinner.
