Vanilla Cake

The Most Amazing Vanilla Cake recipe is moist and flavorful and made completely from scratch. It's the best homemade vanilla cake you'll ever have! And it's easy to make too!


• ½ cup salted butter, softened
• ½ cup vegetable oil
• 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
• 1 ½ cups buttermilk, warmed to room temperature
• 3 large eggs, warmed to room temperature
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
• 3 ½ cups cake flour
• 4 teaspoons baking powder
• ½ teaspoon salt


  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease two 9-inch round cake pans with butter or nonstick cooking spray and then line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, use a hand mixer on high speed to cream the butter, vegetable oil, and sugar together until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes. Add the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat on low speed until combined.
  3. Add the cake flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until just combined. Use a rubber spatula to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl to ensure all of the ingredients are incorporated.
  4. Divide the batter among the prepared pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Let the cakes sit in the pans on a wire rack to cool completely before turning them out onto the rack.
  5. To assemble, frost in between the layers as you stack the cakes and then frost and decorate the top and sides.
