Tequenos

Tequenos

Tequeños are a popular meal or snack in Venezuela. They are basically white cheese sticks wrapped with a crunchy and slightly sweet dough.

Here's how to make them:

INGREDIENTS

  • 150ml (3/4 cup) of water
  • 7g of dry yeast
  • 13g (1 tbsp) of sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 50g (1/4 cup) of butter
  • 530g (4 1/2 cups) of all-purpose flour
  • 12g (2 tsp) of salt
  • 500g of white cheese
  • Oil for frying

METHOD

1. In a bowl add the water, dry yeast, sugar, eggs, and butter, and whisk. Add the salt and gradually add the flour and mix with a spatula.

2. When the dough starts to form knead it with your hands to obtain a smooth dough. Wrap it in cling film and let it rest for 20 minutes.

3. Cut the white cheese into strips (8cm x 1.5cm size) and set aside.

4. After time has elapsed split the dough into three parts. Roll out each one with the rolling pin and cut on strips.

5. Wrap the sliced strips around each piece of cheese and close it well pressing with your hands.

6. Transfer them to the pan with hot oil and fry until they are golden brown.
