Mexican Hot Chocolate

Made with real chocolate, this drink is beyond flavorful. I grew up making this type of hot chocolate with my mom and I'm so excited to share it with you! Mexican hot chocolate is a rich and flavorful drink that combines chocolate with warm spices for a deliciously comforting treat. Here's a recipe for Mexican hot chocolate:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups milk
- 2 ounces Mexican chocolate (such as Ibarra or Abuelita), chopped
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Whipped cream, cinnamon sticks, or cocoa powder (for garnish, optional)
Instructions:
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium-low heat until it begins to steam. Do not let it come to a boil.
- Add the chopped Mexican chocolate to the milk and whisk continuously until the chocolate is completely melted and well combined.
- Stir in the sugar (if using), ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, vanilla extract, and salt. Continue to whisk until all the ingredients are incorporated and the mixture is smooth and hot.
- Taste the hot chocolate and adjust the sweetness by adding more sugar if desired.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and pour the hot chocolate into mugs.
- If desired, top each mug with a dollop of whipped cream and sprinkle with a pinch of cocoa powder or ground cinnamon. You can also garnish with a cinnamon stick for stirring.
