How to Make Chilaquiles

Chilaquiles is a traditional Mexican dish made with tortilla chips, salsa, and various toppings. It's a popular breakfast or brunch dish that is both flavorful and satisfying. Here's a basic recipe to make chilaquiles:

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tortilla chips
  • 1 cup salsa (red or green, depending on your preference)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Toppings (optional):
    • Fried or scrambled eggs
    • Shredded chicken or beef
    • Crumbled queso fresco or shredded cheese
    • Chopped cilantro
    • Diced avocado
    • Sour cream or Mexican crema

Instructions:

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and sauté until they become translucent and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the tortilla chips to the skillet and toss them with the onion and garlic mixture, making sure the chips are evenly coated.
  4. Pour the salsa over the tortilla chips and gently stir until the chips are coated in the salsa. Cook for a few minutes, until the chips start to soften slightly but are still crispy.
  5. Season with salt to taste, keeping in mind that the tortilla chips and salsa may already contain salt.
  6. If desired, add any additional toppings such as shredded chicken or beef, fried or scrambled eggs, cheese, cilantro, diced avocado, or sour cream. You can customize your chilaquiles with your favorite ingredients.
  7. Continue cooking for another minute or two until the toppings are heated through.
  8. Remove the skillet from heat and serve the chilaquiles immediately while they are still warm.

Chilaquiles can be enjoyed as a standalone dish or accompanied by refried beans, Mexican rice, or a side of guacamole. It's a versatile dish that can be adapted to your preferences and tastes. Enjoy this delicious and satisfying Mexican classic!
