Braided brioche is a sweet, rich bread that's perfect for breakfast or brunch. Here's a recipe to make it at home:
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon milk
- Coarse sugar, for sprinkling (optional)
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, combine the beaten eggs and softened butter.
- Warm the milk in the microwave or on the stovetop until it's warm to the touch, but not hot. Stir in the yeast until it's fully dissolved.
- Add the egg and butter mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Gradually add the yeast and milk mixture to the dough, mixing until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rest for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Divide the dough into three equal portions. Roll each portion into a long, thin rope about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter.
- Braid the ropes together and form the braided loaf into a circle. Pinch the ends of the ropes together to seal.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and milk. Brush the egg wash over the surface of the braided brioche. Sprinkle coarse sugar over the top, if using.
- Bake the brioche for 25-30 minutes, or until it's golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Let the brioche cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
