Instructions:

For the Cake Layers:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Add the milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract and beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  5. Add the boiling water and mix until well combined.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  8. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and cool completely on wire racks.

For the Chocolate Ganache Frosting:

  1. In a medium-sized saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it just starts to simmer.
  2. Remove from heat and add the chocolate chips and vanilla extract.

  4. Let the ganache cool to room temperature and it will thicken to a spreadable consistency.

To Assemble the Cake:

  1. Once the cake layers have cooled, use a serrated knife to level the tops of each layer.
  2. Place one cake layer on a cake stand or serving plate.
  3. Spread a thin layer of ganache frosting on top of the cake layer.
  4. Add another cake layer on top and repeat with the ganache frosting until you have used all twelve layers.
  5. Use the remaining ganache to frost the sides and top of the cake, smoothing it out with an offset spatula.
  6. Decorate the cake with chocolate shavings or other toppings if desired.
