Aloo Mutton Curry

Aloo Mutton Curry is a flavorful Indian dish that combines tender mutton (goat or lamb) with potatoes in a rich and aromatic curry sauce.

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams mutton (goat or lamb), cut into pieces
  • 2 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise (adjust according to spice preference)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 teaspoons red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 teaspoons coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds (saunf)
  • 1/4 cup yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil or ghee in a pressure cooker or a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add cumin seeds and fennel seeds to the hot oil and sauté for a few seconds until they start to splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  4. Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté for a minute until the raw aroma disappears.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften and release their juices.
  6. Now, add the mutton pieces to the pot and mix well with the onion-tomato mixture. Cook for a few minutes until the mutton pieces are slightly browned.
  7. Add the red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and salt. Mix well to coat the mutton with the spices.
  8. Pour in the yogurt and mix it into the curry. Cook for a couple of minutes to incorporate the flavors.
  9. Add enough water to cover the mutton pieces and bring the curry to a boil.
  10. If using a pressure cooker, cover it with the lid and cook the curry for about 4-5 whistles or until the mutton is tender and cooked through. If using a pot, cover it with a lid and simmer the curry for about 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the mutton becomes tender.
  11. Once the mutton is cooked, add the cubed potatoes to the curry. Mix well and cook for an additional 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender.
  12. Sprinkle garam masala over the curry and give it a final stir.
  13. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  14. Serve the Aloo Mutton Curry hot with steamed rice, naan, or roti.

Aloo Mutton Curry is a delightful combination of tender meat and potatoes in a flavorful curry. The spices and slow cooking process infuse the dish with rich flavors, making it a comforting and satisfying meal.
