Pigeon Pepper Roast

Pigeon Pepper Roast

Pigeon Pepper Roast, also known as Pigeon Peppers Fry, is a delicious and spicy dish made with pigeon meat and a blend of aromatic spices. It is a popular dish in the Indian state of Kerala, where pigeon meat is commonly consumed. Here's a recipe to prepare Pigeon Pepper Roast:

Ingredients:

  • 4 pigeon (squab) birds, cleaned and cut into pieces
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a large pan or a pressure cooker over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  2. Add curry leaves and sliced onions. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  3. Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears.
  4. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
  5. Add red chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, black pepper powder, and salt. Mix everything together to form a paste.
  6. Add the pigeon pieces to the pan and mix well with the spice paste. Cook for a few minutes to coat the meat with the spices.
  7. If using a pressure cooker, add a little water (about 1/4 cup) and pressure cook for about 15-20 minutes until the pigeon meat is cooked and tender. If using a regular pan, cover it with a lid and cook on low heat until the pigeon meat is cooked through (this may take around 45 minutes to 1 hour), stirring occasionally and adding water if necessary.
  8. Once the pigeon meat is cooked, remove the lid and cook on high heat for a few minutes to allow the liquid to evaporate and the meat to get a roasted texture.
  9. Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
  10. Serve hot with steamed rice, roti, or as a side dish with any Indian meal.

Note: Adjust the spice levels according to your preference. Pigeon meat can be substituted with other meats like chicken if pigeon is not available.
