Apple Baskets

Apple basket puff pastry is a delightful dessert that combines the sweetness of apples with the flaky and buttery texture of puff pastry. It's a visually appealing treat that resembles little baskets filled with apple slices. Here's a recipe to guide you:

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium-sized apples (sweet varieties like Fuji or Gala work well)
  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed if using frozen)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Peel the apples and remove the cores. Cut them in half vertically and slice them into thin half-moon shapes. Place the apple slices in a bowl.
  3. In a separate small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon. Mix well.
  4. Brush the melted butter onto the puff pastry sheet to lightly coat it.
  5. Cut the puff pastry into rectangular strips, about 1 inch wide and 4-5 inches long.
  6. Arrange the apple slices along the length of each puff pastry strip, overlapping them slightly. Leave some space at the ends to fold and create a basket shape.
  7. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the apple slices, ensuring they are well coated.
  8. Carefully fold up the sides of the puff pastry strip to create a basket shape, gently pressing the corners together to hold them in place.
  9. Place the assembled apple baskets onto the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 15-18 minutes, or until the puff pastry turns golden brown and the apples are tender.
  11. Once baked, remove the apple baskets from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes.
  12. Optional: Dust the apple baskets with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.
  13. Serve the apple baskets warm, either on their own or with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.

The apple basket puff pastries are best enjoyed fresh from the oven when the pastry is still crispy and the apples are warm and fragrant. They make a lovely dessert for special occasions or as a sweet treat to indulge in.
