Irresistible Caramelized Onion Bread
Irresistible Caramelized Onion Bread is a delicious homemade bread with a sweet and savory twist.
Ingredients:
For the bread dough:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
For the caramelized onions:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For the topping:
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir well and let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon until it comes together to form a dough.
- Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment to knead the dough.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- While the dough is rising, prepare the caramelized onions. Heat the butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir well to coat the onions with the butter and oil.
- Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 25-30 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and caramelize. Remove from heat and let them cool.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a bread loaf pan.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Transfer it to a floured surface and roll it out into a rectangle.
- Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Starting from one end, tightly roll the dough into a log shape. Pinch the edges to seal.
- Place the rolled dough into the greased loaf pan. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise for an additional 30-45 minutes until it rises slightly.
- Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese and fresh thyme leaves (if using) over the top of the bread.
- Bake the bread in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
- Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
- Slice and serve the irresistible Caramelized Onion Bread as a tasty side dish or enjoy it on its own.
Note: You can adjust the amount of caramelized onions according to your preference. Feel free to add additional herbs or spices to enhance the flavor of the bread.
