Irresistible Caramelized Onion Bread

Irresistible Caramelized Onion Bread is a delicious homemade bread with a sweet and savory twist.

For the bread dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the caramelized onions:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the topping:

  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir well and let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon until it comes together to form a dough.
  4. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment to knead the dough.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  6. While the dough is rising, prepare the caramelized onions. Heat the butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  7. Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir well to coat the onions with the butter and oil.
  8. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 25-30 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and caramelize. Remove from heat and let them cool.
  9. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a bread loaf pan.
  10. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Transfer it to a floured surface and roll it out into a rectangle.
  11. Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  12. Starting from one end, tightly roll the dough into a log shape. Pinch the edges to seal.
  13. Place the rolled dough into the greased loaf pan. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise for an additional 30-45 minutes until it rises slightly.
  14. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese and fresh thyme leaves (if using) over the top of the bread.
  15. Bake the bread in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  16. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
  17. Slice and serve the irresistible Caramelized Onion Bread as a tasty side dish or enjoy it on its own.

Note: You can adjust the amount of caramelized onions according to your preference. Feel free to add additional herbs or spices to enhance the flavor of the bread.
