Goan Fish Curry is a flavorful and spicy seafood dish from the coastal region of Goa in India. It is known for its rich and tangy sauce made with coconut milk and a blend of aromatic spices. Here's a recipe to help you make Goan Fish Curry:
Ingredients:
- 500 grams firm white fish fillets (such as cod or snapper), cut into chunks
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise (adjust to your spice preference)
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1 tablespoon tamarind pulp or lemon juice
- Salt, to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
- Vegetable oil
Instructions:
- Heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large pan or skillet over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chilies to the pan. Sauté until the onions turn translucent and the mixture becomes aromatic.
- In a small bowl, mix together the turmeric powder, red chili powder, ground coriander, and ground cumin with a little water to form a paste.
- Add the spice paste to the pan and cook for a minute, stirring continuously to coat the onions and spices evenly.
- Pour in the coconut milk and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cook for a few minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Add the tamarind pulp or lemon juice to the pan and season with salt according to your taste. Stir well to incorporate all the ingredients.
- Gently place the fish chunks into the pan, ensuring they are submerged in the sauce. Simmer the curry on low heat for about 8-10 minutes or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily.
- Once the fish is cooked, remove the pan from heat.
- Garnish the Goan Fish Curry with fresh chopped coriander leaves.
- Serve the curry hot with steamed rice or crusty bread.
