Goan Fish Curry

Goan Fish Curry is a flavorful and spicy seafood dish from the coastal region of Goa in India. It is known for its rich and tangy sauce made with coconut milk and a blend of aromatic spices. Here's a recipe to help you make Goan Fish Curry:

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams firm white fish fillets (such as cod or snapper), cut into chunks
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind pulp or lemon juice
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
  • Vegetable oil

Instructions:

  1. Heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large pan or skillet over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  2. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chilies to the pan. Sauté until the onions turn translucent and the mixture becomes aromatic.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together the turmeric powder, red chili powder, ground coriander, and ground cumin with a little water to form a paste.
  4. Add the spice paste to the pan and cook for a minute, stirring continuously to coat the onions and spices evenly.
  5. Pour in the coconut milk and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cook for a few minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  6. Add the tamarind pulp or lemon juice to the pan and season with salt according to your taste. Stir well to incorporate all the ingredients.
  7. Gently place the fish chunks into the pan, ensuring they are submerged in the sauce. Simmer the curry on low heat for about 8-10 minutes or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily.
  8. Once the fish is cooked, remove the pan from heat.
  9. Garnish the Goan Fish Curry with fresh chopped coriander leaves.
  10. Serve the curry hot with steamed rice or crusty bread.

Enjoy the delightful flavors of Goan Fish Curry, with its tangy and creamy coconut-based sauce. The combination of spices and fish creates a truly satisfying and aromatic dish.
