Prawn Toast

Prawn Toast

Prawn toast is a popular appetizer or snack in many Asian cuisines, particularly in Chinese and Thai cuisine. It consists of slices of bread topped with a mixture of minced or finely chopped prawns (shrimp), seasonings, and other ingredients, then deep-fried or baked until crispy.

Ingredients:

  • Slices of white bread
  • 200 grams (7 ounces) of raw prawns (shrimp), peeled and deveined
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 small piece of ginger, grated
  • 2 spring onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooking oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a food processor, blend the prawns until they form a paste-like consistency.
  2. Transfer the prawn paste to a bowl and add the minced garlic, grated ginger, chopped spring onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
  3. Trim the crusts off the bread slices and cut them into triangles or rectangles.
  4. Spread a generous amount of the prawn mixture onto one side of each bread slice.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pan or wok for deep-frying. The oil should be about 1-2 inches deep.
  6. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the prawn toasts, prawn side down, into the oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes until the prawn topping turns golden brown.
  7. Flip the toasts over and fry for another 1-2 minutes until the bread is crispy and golden.
  8. Use a slotted spoon to remove the prawn toasts from the oil and drain them on a paper towel to remove excess oil.
  9. Serve the prawn toasts hot as an appetizer or snack. They can be enjoyed as is or with a dipping sauce such as sweet chili sauce or soy sauce.
