Homemade Mochi

Homemade Mochi

Homemade mochi can be a versatile dessert that allows you to get creative with flavors and fillings. You can even experiment with different shapes and colors by adding natural food colorings or matcha (green tea) powder to the mochi dough. It's a fun and delicious treat that's perfect for special occasions or a sweet snack any time.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup glutinous rice flour (also called sweet rice flour)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Cornstarch or potato starch (for dusting)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Mochi Dough:
    • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the glutinous rice flour and sugar.
    • Gradually add water and stir until the mixture is smooth and the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Microwave the Mochi:
    • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a microwave-safe lid to prevent splattering.
    • Microwave the mixture on high for 1 minute.
  3. Knead the Mochi:
    • Carefully remove the bowl from the microwave (it will be hot) and stir the mochi mixture.
    • Re-cover the bowl and microwave for an additional 1 minute.
  4. Shape the Mochi:
    • Dust a clean surface with cornstarch or potato starch to prevent sticking.
    • Transfer the hot mochi mixture onto the dusted surface.
    • Let it cool for a few minutes until it's safe to touch.
  5. Cut and Serve:
    • Cut the mochi into small pieces or roll it into balls, using more starch as needed to prevent sticking.
    • Enjoy your homemade mochi as is or fill it with your favorite sweet fillings, such as red bean paste, strawberries, or ice cream.
