Baked Candied Yams

Ingredients:

  • 4 to 5 medium-sized yams or sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into rounds or chunks
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Marshmallows for topping (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Yams:
    • Peel the yams or sweet potatoes and cut them into rounds or chunks, whichever you prefer.
  3. Prepare the Candied Coating:
    • In a bowl, mix together the melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Coat the Yams:
    • Place the yam slices or chunks in a large mixing bowl. Pour the candied coating mixture over the yams and toss until they are evenly coated.
  5. Bake:
    • Transfer the coated yams to a baking dish in a single layer.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes, or until the yams are tender, stirring occasionally to ensure even coating.
  6. Optional Marshmallow Topping:
    • If you want to add marshmallows, remove the dish from the oven a few minutes before the yams are done, sprinkle marshmallows on top, and return to the oven until the marshmallows are golden brown.
  7. Serve:
    • Once the yams are tender and cooked through, remove from the oven. Let them rest for a few minutes before serving.
