The Best Apple Crisp

The Best Apple Crisp

This apple crisp is one of my favorite fall desserts and is perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas. A sweet cinnamon apple filling is layered with the best oat crumble topping and baked until golden. It comes out of the oven perfectly warm and tastes even better with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of custard on top!

I also prefer this apple crisp (sometimes called apple crumble) to making an apple pie. Not only is it much easier to make, but with each bite you also get a bit of the crumbly topping with the sweet, glazed apples. I hope you love it!

For the Filling:

  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp works well)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the Apple Filling:
    • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, ground cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Make the Topping:
    • In another bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon.
    • Add the cold, diced butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Assemble and Bake:
    • Spread the prepared apple filling evenly in the greased baking dish.
    • Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 40-45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown, and the apple filling is bubbly.
  6. Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the apple crisp to cool for a bit before serving. It's delicious on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
