Ingredients:

For the Chocolate Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 and 1/2 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions:

For the Chocolate Cake:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients:
    • Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
  4. Add Boiling Water:
    • Stir in the boiling water until the batter is well mixed. The batter will be thin, but that's okay.
  5. Pour into Pans:
    • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool:
    • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

For the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting:

  1. Cream Butter and Cocoa:
    • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Add the cocoa powder and beat until well combined.
  2. Add Sugar and Milk:
    • Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with milk, beating continuously. Add vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Beat until smooth and creamy.
  3. Frost the Cake:
    • Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread a layer of chocolate buttercream frosting over the top of one cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake.
  4. Decorate (Optional):
    • Decorate the cake with additional frosting, chocolate shavings, or other decorations if desired.
  5. Slice and Enjoy:
    • Slice and enjoy your decadent Chocolate Buttercream Cake!
