Turkey Bread Ingredients:
For the Bread Dough:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
For Decoration:
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Prepare Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead and Rise:
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
- Shape the Turkey:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a turkey. You can shape the body, neck, and head.
- Place the shaped turkey on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Add Details:
- Use additional pieces of dough to create details like wings, feathers, and a beak. Attach them securely to the main turkey shape.
- Egg Wash and Seeds:
- Beat an egg and brush it over the entire surface of the turkey. This will give it a golden-brown color when baked.
- Sprinkle sesame seeds or poppy seeds over the turkey to add texture.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool:
- Allow the turkey-shaped bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
