Turkey Bread Ingredients:

For the Bread Dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For Decoration:

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Prepare Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.
    • Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead and Rise:
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
  4. Shape the Turkey:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a turkey. You can shape the body, neck, and head.
    • Place the shaped turkey on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Add Details:
    • Use additional pieces of dough to create details like wings, feathers, and a beak. Attach them securely to the main turkey shape.
  6. Egg Wash and Seeds:
    • Beat an egg and brush it over the entire surface of the turkey. This will give it a golden-brown color when baked.
    • Sprinkle sesame seeds or poppy seeds over the turkey to add texture.
  7. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool:
    • Allow the turkey-shaped bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
