Rava Upma

Rava Upma

Sooji Upma, also known as Semolina Upma, is a popular South Indian dish made from coarse wheat semolina. It's a quick and nutritious breakfast or snack.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup semolina (rava/sooji)
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal (split black gram)
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal (split Bengal gram)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onions
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped carrots
  • 1/4 cup green peas
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped bell peppers
  • 1-2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 2.5 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • Chopped coriander leaves for garnish
  • Lemon wedges (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Dry roast semolina in a pan until it turns golden brown. Set aside.
  2. In the same pan, heat ghee or oil. Add mustard seeds, urad dal, and chana dal. Let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions, green chilies, and grated ginger. Sauté until onions are translucent.
  4. Add chopped vegetables (carrots, peas, bell peppers) and sauté for a few minutes.
  5. Pour water into the pan and bring it to a boil. Add salt.
  6. Gradually add the roasted semolina while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
  7. Reduce heat to low, cover the pan, and let it simmer until the upma is cooked and has a fluffy texture.
  8. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot. Optionally, squeeze some lemon juice before serving.
