Ingredients:
- 1 block firm tofu, pressed and cut into bite-sized cubes
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Dipping sauce of choice (sweet chili, soy, or garlic aioli)
Steps:
- Prepare Tofu: Press the tofu to remove excess water. Cut into bite-sized cubes.
- Coat in Cornstarch: In a bowl, mix cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, five-spice powder, salt, and black pepper. Coat each tofu cube thoroughly with the mixture.
- Heat Oil: In a pan or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry Tofu Cubes: Carefully drop the coated tofu cubes into the hot oil. Fry until they turn golden brown and crispy on all sides. This usually takes about 3-4 minutes.
- Drain Excess Oil: Remove the popcorn tofu from the oil and place them on a paper towel to absorb any excess oil.
