Taiwanese Popcorn Tofu

Taiwanese Popcorn Tofu

Ingredients:

  • 1 block firm tofu, pressed and cut into bite-sized cubes
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Dipping sauce of choice (sweet chili, soy, or garlic aioli)

Steps:

  1. Prepare Tofu: Press the tofu to remove excess water. Cut into bite-sized cubes.
  2. Coat in Cornstarch: In a bowl, mix cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, five-spice powder, salt, and black pepper. Coat each tofu cube thoroughly with the mixture.
  3. Heat Oil: In a pan or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Fry Tofu Cubes: Carefully drop the coated tofu cubes into the hot oil. Fry until they turn golden brown and crispy on all sides. This usually takes about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Drain Excess Oil: Remove the popcorn tofu from the oil and place them on a paper towel to absorb any excess oil.
  6. Serve with Dipping Sauce: Arrange the crispy tofu cubes on a serving plate. Serve immediately with your preferred dipping sauce.
