Dal Chawal

Ingredients:

  • For Dal:
    • 1 cup split yellow lentils (toor dal)
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • 1 medium tomato, chopped
    • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
    • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
    • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
    • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
    • 1-2 green chilies, chopped
    • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
    • Salt to taste
    • Water for cooking
    • Ghee or oil for tempering
  • For Chawal:
    • 1 cup basmati rice
    • Water for cooking
    • Salt to taste

Cooking Steps:

Step 1: Cook Dal Wash lentils and cook with water, turmeric powder, chopped tomatoes, and salt until soft. In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, chopped onions, green chilies, and ginger-garlic paste. Sauté until onions are golden brown. Pour this tempering over the cooked dal.

Step 2: Cook Chawal Rinse basmati rice and cook with water and salt until each grain is separate and tender.

Step 3: Serve Hot Plate the dal alongside rice. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with a dollop of ghee and, if desired, a side of pickles or yogurt.
