English Muffins at Home
Ingredients:
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 3/4 cup warm milk
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
- Cornmeal for dusting
Steps:
- In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and softened butter.
- Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 5-8 minutes or until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size (approximately 1-1.5 hours).
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Using a round cutter, cut out the English muffins. Dust each side with cornmeal.
- Heat a griddle or skillet over medium-low heat. Cook the muffins for 6-8 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
- Once cooked, let the muffins cool on a wire rack.
