  2. Butter and flour for greasing and dusting the cake pans

For the Buttercream:

  1. Unsalted butter (2 cups, softened)
  2. Confectioners' sugar (4-5 cups, sifted)
  3. Vanilla extract (2 teaspoons)
  4. Milk or heavy cream (2-4 tablespoons)

For Decoration:

  1. Gel food coloring (red or desired color)
  2. Piping bags and tips for decorating

Instructions:

  1. Bake the Cake:
    • Preheat your oven according to the cake recipe instructions. Grease and flour cake pans. Prepare and bake the cake according to the recipe or mix instructions. Let it cool completely.
  2. Prepare Buttercream:
    • In a large bowl, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add sifted confectioners' sugar, one cup at a time, and continue beating until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Add Vanilla Extract:
    • Mix in vanilla extract to the buttercream. Adjust the consistency by adding milk or heavy cream if needed.
  4. Color Buttercream:
    • Divide the buttercream into two portions. Leave one portion white and color the other portion with red or your desired gel food coloring to create a vibrant color for the heart.
  5. Slice and Assemble Cake:
    • If necessary, level the cooled cakes. Cut each cake layer into the shape of half a heart. Place one layer on your serving plate or cake board.
  6. Crumb Coat:
    • Apply a thin crumb coat of white buttercream on the cake. This helps to seal in the crumbs.
  7. Create Heart Shape:
    • Carefully place the other cake layer next to the first one, creating a heart shape. Frost the entire cake with the white buttercream.
  8. Decorate with Colored Buttercream:
    • Using a piping bag and tip, pipe the colored buttercream around the edges of the heart shape, creating a border. You can also add additional decorative details with different piping tips.
  9. Optional: Add Messages or Details:
    • Add messages or personalized details to the cake using additional colored buttercream.
  10. Smooth and Refine:
    • Smooth the buttercream with a cake smoother or spatula for a polished finish.
  11. Serve or Refrigerate:
    • Once decorated, serve the Buttercream Heart Cake immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.

Tips:

  • For a neater finish, refrigerate the cake briefly after the crumb coat before applying the final layer of buttercream.
  • Experiment with different piping tips to create various textures and patterns.
