Assam Fish Curry

Ingredients:

  • 500g fish (rohu, tilapia, or your choice), cleaned and cut into pieces
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon mustard oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon nigella seeds (kalonji)
  • 1/2 cup tamarind pulp
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon red chili powder
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Cooking Steps:

Step 1: Marinate the fish pieces with turmeric powder and a pinch of salt. Set aside for 15-20 minutes.

Step 2: Heat mustard oil in a pan until it starts smoking. Allow it to cool slightly.

Step 3: Add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, and nigella seeds to the hot oil. Let them splutter.

Step 4: Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

Step 5: Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, and chopped tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.

Step 6: Add the marinated fish pieces to the pan. Gently coat them with the masala.

Step 7: Pour in tamarind pulp and add slit green chilies. Mix well.

Step 8: Season with salt and let the curry simmer until the fish is cooked through.

Step 9: Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
