Crispy Tofu Bistek

Ingredients:

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup calamansi or lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 onion, sliced into rings
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional for thickening)
  • Green onions for garnish

Steps:

Step 1: In a bowl, mix soy sauce, calamansi or lime juice, and brown sugar to create the marinade.

Step 2: Toss tofu cubes in the marinade and let them soak for at least 15 minutes.

Step 3: In a skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add marinated tofu cubes, cooking until they achieve a crispy golden exterior.

Step 4: Remove crispy tofu from the pan and set aside.

Step 5: In the same pan, sauté minced garlic and sliced onions until softened.

Step 6: Pour in the water and let it simmer. Optional: add cornstarch for a thicker sauce.

Step 7: Return the crispy tofu to the pan, coating it in the soy-citrus sauce.

Step 8: Garnish with green onions and serve the Crispy Tofu Bistek over rice, enjoying the delightful interplay of crispy tofu and zesty Bistek flavors.
