Methodology: energy conversion factors
NiftyRecipe converts kilocalories, calories, kilojoules, megajoules, kilowatt-hours and BTU with fixed physical factors - not live market rates.
Base chain
- 1 kcal (thermochemical) = 4184 J
- 1 cal = 4.184 J (1 kcal = 1000 cal)
- 1 kJ = 1000 J, 1 MJ = 1 000 000 J
- 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ exactly
- BTU (IT) via the same joule base used in heating and AC ratings
Food labels
On packaging, “Calorie” almost always means kilocalorie (kcal). Use the kcal ↔ kJ calculator for nutrition totals.
Electrical energy
kWh → kcal is a physical equivalence, not a utility tariff or diet claim. Factors do not change by time of day.
