Garlic Mashed Potatoes Recipe

Creamy Garlic Mashed Potatoes are the ultimate side dish for Thanksgiving dinner, paired with Roast Turkey and Gravy. This simple side dish is easy to prepare and it's one of the tastiest mashed potato recipes we've tried.

Ingredients:

  • 4 lbs Yukon potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1 1/3 cups whole milk (or half and half)
  • 6 cloves garlic, crushed or minced
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt, or to taste
  • 8 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened, plus more to serve
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp chives, chopped, for garnish

Instructions:

1. Cook the Potatoes:

  • Place the peeled and quartered Yukon potatoes in a large pot. Cover with cold water and add a pinch of salt.
  • Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to maintain a simmer. Cook the potatoes until fork-tender, usually about 15-20 minutes.

2. Prepare the Garlic:

  • While the potatoes are cooking, heat the whole milk (or half and half) and crushed/minced garlic in a small saucepan over low heat. Allow the garlic to infuse into the milk but be careful not to let it boil. Once warmed, remove it from the heat.

3. Mash the Potatoes:

  • Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Mash them with a potato masher or use a ricer for a smoother texture.

4. Add the Creamy Mixture:

  • Gradually pour the warm milk and garlic mixture into the mashed potatoes, stirring continuously. Ensure the mixture is well incorporated.

5. Season:

  • Add salt to taste. Be cautious with the salt, as you can adjust it later if needed.

6. Add Butter:

  • Add the softened butter to the mashed potatoes. Continue to mash and stir until the butter is fully melted and the potatoes are smooth and creamy.

7. Optional: Add Sour Cream:

  • If using sour cream, fold it into the mashed potatoes to add extra creaminess. Adjust the consistency with more milk if necessary.

8. Adjust Consistency:

  • If the mashed potatoes are too thick, you can add more warm milk in small increments until you reach your desired consistency.

9. Garnish:

  • Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving dish. Garnish with chopped chives.

10. Serve:

  • Serve the creamy garlic mashed potatoes hot, with an extra pat of butter on top if desired.

11. Enjoy:

  • Enjoy these creamy and flavorful mashed potatoes as a side dish for your favorite meals!
