Ingredients:

For Cake Layers (Basic Vanilla Cake):

  1. 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  3. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  4. 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  5. 2 cups granulated sugar
  6. 4 large eggs
  7. 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  8. 1 cup whole milk

For Buttercream Frosting:

  1. 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  2. 4 cups powdered sugar
  3. 1/4 cup whole milk
  4. 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For Fondant:

  1. Store-bought fondant or homemade marshmallow fondant

Steps:

Cake Layers: Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour cake pans.

Step 2: In a bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3: In another bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.

Step 4: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients.

Step 5: Divide the batter among the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool completely.

Buttercream Frosting: Step 6: In a bowl, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth and fluffy.

Assembling and Frosting: Step 7: Level the cooled cake layers and stack them, spreading a thin layer of buttercream between each layer.

Step 8: Apply a crumb coat of buttercream to the entire cake and refrigerate for 15-20 minutes.

Step 9: Roll out fondant to the desired thickness on a surface dusted with powdered sugar. Carefully drape the fondant over the chilled cake, smoothing it with hands to eliminate air bubbles.

Step 10: Trim excess fondant and decorate the cake as desired.
