Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/4 cups whole milk
- Assorted gel food colors for the buttercream
- 3 cups powdered sugar for the buttercream

Cooking Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease and flour three 8-inch cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla extract.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with milk, until well combined.
- Divide the batter evenly into separate bowls and tint each bowl with a different color of gel food coloring.
- Pour the colored batters into the prepared cake pans, creating layers.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool completely.
- For the buttercream, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and beat until smooth.
- Divide the buttercream into bowls and tint each bowl with a different color.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate, frost the top with a layer of buttercream. Repeat with the remaining layers.
- Use the remaining buttercream to frost the sides and top of the cake, creating a rainbow effect.
- Decorate as desired with festive sprinkles, ornaments, or edible glitter.
