Bread Bowls 4 Ways
Double Cheeseburger Bread Bowl
Ingredients
for 4 servings
1 loaf sourdough bread
2 lb ground beef
2 teaspoons garlic powder, divided
2 teaspoons onion powder, divided
2 teaspoons black pepper, divided
2 teaspoons salt, divided
1 tomato, sliced
1 onion, sliced and sauteed
8 oz sliced mushroom, 1 package, sauteed
½ cup spinach, packed
8 pieces bacon, cooked
cheddar cheese
swiss cheese
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 350˚F (180˚F).
- In a circular cake pan, add half of the ground beef and season with half of the garlic powder, half of the onion powder, half of the pepper, and half of the salt. Mix to combine then press the beef into patty form.
- Bake for 12 minutes.
- Repeat this process for the second patty.
- Slice off the top of the sourdough loaf and scoop out the inside.
- Begin by laying down slices of cheese at the bottom, then add your first burger patty.
- Layer more cheese on top of the patty and continue by adding bacon, sauteed mushrooms & onions, spinach, and tomato.
- Add a second burger patty and repeat step 7.
- Place the top of the loaf back on the bread and wrap in aluminum foil.
- On a level surface, use a heavy object to press the sandwich down for at least 30 minutes.
- Remove aluminum foil.
- Bake for 25 minutes.
- Slice and serve.

Cheese Fondue Bread Boat
Ingredients
for 6 servings
1 loaf sourdough bread
80 g (⅓ cup) butter, melted
3 teaspoons garlic, crushed
180 g cream cheese
50 g (½ cup) shredded cheddar cheese
50 g (½ cup) mozzarella cheese
120 mL (½ cup) milk
¼ teaspoon pepper
¼ teaspoon salt
2 egg yolks
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Cut off the top of the bread. Use a bread knife to cut around the inside of the bread and scoop the center out.
- Cut all the removed bread into bite-sized cubes.
- Mix two-thirds of the crushed garlic into the melted butter. Brush the garlic butter on the bottom and the inside walls of the bread.
- Dip all the bread cubes in the remaining garlic butter, set aside.
- Combine the cream cheese, cheddar, mozzarella, milk, remaining crushed garlic, salt, and pepper.
- Pour the cheese mixture into the bread.
- Brush the top of the cheese mixture with egg yolk.
- Place the bread boat and the bread cubes onto an oven tray.
- Bake for 15 minutes, remove the croutons, and continue cooking the bread boat for another 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and a golden brown crust is formed.

Pizza Bread Bowl
Ingredients
for 1 bowl
1 bread boule
1 cup marinara sauce
8 oz fresh mozzarella
6 oz pepperoni
½ onion, sliced
½ cup fresh basil
1 cup sausage, cooked
1 green bell pepper, sliced
1 cup white cheddar, shredded
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175˚C).
- Slice the top of the bread boule off and remove the insides.
- Spread ½ cup of the marinara on the bottom of the boule, then layer with half of the mozzarella, 5 ounces of the pepperoni, onions, basil, sausage, peppers, the other ½ cup of marinara, the remaining mozzarella, and half of the white cheddar, and place the cap of the bread boule on top.
- Wrap the bread bowl in foil, then press with a heavy object for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining cheddar and pepperoni on top. Bake for 30 minutes, until cheese is golden brown.
- Cool for 10 minutes and slice.
- Enjoy!
Flammkuchen Bread Bowl
Ingredients
for 4 servings
1 loaf sourdough bread, dark
1 ½ cups sour cream
½ red onion, diced
3 pieces bacon, or pancetta, cubed
3 tablespoons butter
1 cup grated gruyere cheese
pepper, to taste
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 480°F/250˚C.
- Fry the bacon and the onions in a pan.
- Mix fried onions, bacon, and sour cream in a bowl and season with pepper.
- Cut off the top of the bread and remove the inside with a spoon.
- Fill the bread with the sour cream mixture and cover with gruyère cheese.
- Spread butter on the leftover bread, cut into thick chunks, and place on a baking tray together with the bread bowl.
- Bake for 15 minutes or until the bread is crispy and the cheese golden brown.
- Enjoy!
