Beef Shogayaki

Beef Shogayaki

Beef Shogayaki is a popular Japanese dish made with thinly sliced beef cooked in a savory and ginger-infused sauce. It is a flavorful and quick stir-fry dish that is often served with steamed rice and a side of vegetables. Here's a simple recipe for Beef Shogayaki:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound thinly sliced beef (such as sirloin or ribeye)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons mirin (sweet rice wine)
  • 1 tablespoon sake (Japanese rice wine) or dry white wine
  • 2 tablespoons grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey (optional)
  • Thinly sliced green onions (scallions) for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, mix together the soy sauce, mirin, sake, grated ginger, and optional brown sugar or honey. This will be the marinade and sauce for the Beef Shogayaki.
  2. Add the thinly sliced beef to the marinade and toss to coat the beef evenly. Let it marinate for about 15-30 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.
  3. Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the vegetable oil and sesame oil (if using) to the pan.
  4. Once the oil is hot, add the marinated beef to the pan, reserving the marinade for later. Stir-fry the beef for a few minutes until it is cooked through and slightly browned.
  5. Pour the reserved marinade into the pan with the beef and continue to stir-fry for another minute or until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the beef.
  6. Remove the pan from the heat and transfer the Beef Shogayaki to a serving plate.
  7. Garnish with thinly sliced green onions (scallions) for added freshness and flavor.
  8. Serve the Beef Shogayaki hot with steamed rice and your choice of side vegetables, such as stir-fried bok choy or steamed broccoli.
