Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions:

For the Dough:

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and eggs to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.

For the Topping:

  1. In a separate bowl, mix together softened butter, sugar, flour, and vanilla extract until it forms a crumbly texture. If desired, divide the topping and add food coloring to create different colors.
  2. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions.
  4. Shape each portion into a ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Flatten each dough ball slightly and cover them with the crumbly topping, pressing it down gently.
  6. Allow the conchas to rise for an additional 15-20 minutes.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
  8. Let the conchas cool on a wire rack before serving.
