Conchas
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
For the Topping:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions:
For the Dough:
- In a small bowl, combine warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
- Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and eggs to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
For the Topping:
- In a separate bowl, mix together softened butter, sugar, flour, and vanilla extract until it forms a crumbly texture. If desired, divide the topping and add food coloring to create different colors.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions.
- Shape each portion into a ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Flatten each dough ball slightly and cover them with the crumbly topping, pressing it down gently.
- Allow the conchas to rise for an additional 15-20 minutes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
- Let the conchas cool on a wire rack before serving.
