Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Red food coloring (optional)
- Cream cheese frosting:
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Steps:
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour cake pans.
Step 2: In a bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Step 3: In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk. Add vanilla extract and red food coloring if desired.
Step 4: Divide the batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow cakes to cool completely.
Step 5: For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, beating until creamy.
Step 6: Once cakes are cooled, frost and layer them with cream cheese frosting. Decorate as desired with sprinkles or edible flowers.
