Asian Style Soy Sauce Tofu

Asian Style Soy Sauce Tofu

Ingredients:

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed and cut into cubes
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon mirin (sweet rice wine) or dry sherry
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • Green onions and sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
  • Cooking oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture. Cut the tofu into cubes of your desired size.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, mirin, brown sugar, grated ginger, and minced garlic to create the marinade.
  3. Place the tofu cubes in a shallow dish or a zip-top bag and pour the marinade over them. Ensure the tofu is well-coated. Allow it to marinate for at least 30 minutes, or longer for more flavor.
  4. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water to create a slurry.
  5. Heat cooking oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  6. Remove the tofu cubes from the marinade and add them to the hot pan. Reserve the marinade for later.
  7. Cook the tofu cubes until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  8. Once the tofu is cooked, add the reserved marinade to the pan. Pour in the cornstarch slurry and stir gently to coat the tofu. Allow the sauce to thicken.
  9. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired.
