Healthy Tomato Dal

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup split red lentils (masoor dal), rinsed
  • 3 medium-sized tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Cooking Steps:

Step 1: Rinse the split red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.

Step 2: In a pressure cooker or a pot, combine lentils, chopped tomatoes, chopped onion, green chilies, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, and salt.

Step 3: Add enough water to cover the lentils and bring it to a boil.

Step 4: Once boiling, reduce the heat, cover, and simmer until the lentils are cooked and tomatoes are soft.

Step 5: In a separate pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and asafoetida. Allow them to splutter.

Step 6: Pour the seasoned oil mixture into the cooked lentils, stirring well.

Step 7: Sprinkle garam masala and let the dal simmer for a few more minutes.

Step 8: Adjust salt and spice levels according to taste.

Step 9: Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
