Easy Braised Tofu and Mushrooms

Ingredients:

  • 1 block firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 2 cups mushrooms (shiitake, cremini, or your choice), sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (or vegetarian oyster sauce for a plant-based version)
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (optional for thickening)
  • Green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • Cooked rice or noodles for serving

Preparation:

Step 1: Press Tofu Press the tofu to remove excess water. Cut it into cubes.

Step 2: Sauté Tofu and Mushrooms In a large skillet or wok, heat sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add cubed tofu and sliced mushrooms. Sauté until the tofu is golden brown and the mushrooms are tender.

Step 3: Prepare Sauce In a bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, minced garlic, and grated ginger.

Step 4: Add Sauce and Broth Pour the sauce over the tofu and mushrooms. Stir to coat evenly. Add vegetable broth, reduce heat to medium, and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.

Step 5: Optional Thickening If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix cornstarch with water to create a slurry. Stir it into the skillet and cook until the sauce thickens.

Step 6: Garnish and Serve Garnish the braised tofu and mushrooms with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Serve over cooked rice or noodles.
